Shed Engineering Costs Australia

An honest, complete cost breakdown. No hidden fees, no hourly rate surprises. Here's exactly what shed engineering costs and what you get for your money.

Total Project Cost Overview

The engineering component of a shed project has several parts:

Engineering Design

$3,200+GST

Complete structural package: drawings, shop drawings, calculations, certificate. Flat fee at Sheds.Design.

Building Permit

$500 – $2,000

Council or private building surveyor. Document review, inspections, final certificate.

Soil Report

$300 – $800

Geotechnical investigation if required. Not every site needs one.

What's Included in the $3,200+GST

Our flat fee package is comprehensive. You receive:

  • Complete structural drawings (plans, elevations, cross-sections) — typically 15–25 pages
  • Shop drawings — fabrication-ready details for every connection, base plate, apex bracket, and bracing element
  • Member schedules — every column, rafter, purlin, girt, and brace specified with section size, steel grade, and length
  • Slab/footing design — designed to AS 2870 for your site-specific soil conditions
  • Structural calculations — full analysis to AS/NZS 1170 (wind and loads), AS 4100/4600 (steel), AS 2870 (footings)
  • Certificate of compliance — signed by a chartered engineer, required for the building permit
  • Specifications — materials, construction methods, bolt grades, steel grades, coating requirements
  • Revision support — if council requests additional information or modifications, we handle it at no extra cost
No hourly rates, no surprises. The $3,200+GST is the total fee. If council asks for extra information, that's included. If you need a minor design change, that's included. You know the cost before you commit.

What Drives the Cost

Shed Size

Larger sheds have more structural members, more connections, and more complex load paths. A 6m × 9m single-bay shed has fewer design elements than a 30m × 18m multi-bay machinery shed.

Wind Region

Sheds in cyclonic wind regions (B, C, D) require significantly heavier engineering than non-cyclonic regions (A). Cyclonic design involves higher design wind speeds, cyclonic connection categories, and additional tie-down requirements.

Purpose and Loads

A hay shed with large open bays has different engineering requirements than an enclosed workshop or a grain storage shed with significant stored loads. Crane beams, mezzanine floors, and heavy point loads all increase design complexity.

Site Conditions

Sloping sites, high terrain categories (hills, ridgelines), coastal exposure, and poor soil conditions all increase the engineering effort required.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does shed engineering cost?
$3,200+GST flat fee at Sheds.Design. Includes everything: structural drawings, shop drawings, slab design, calculations, and certificate of compliance.
Does $3,200 include slab design?
Yes. The complete package includes frame design, connection design, slab/footing design, shop drawings, calculations, and certificate.
How much does a shed building permit cost?
$500–$2,000 depending on state and council. Paid separately to the building surveyor.
Why is shed engineering more expensive than a retaining wall?
Sheds are complex 3D structures with wind uplift, internal pressure, bracing in two directions, and connections at every joint. The drawings package is typically 15–25 pages.
